The Vice President of Corporate Development - Origination is responsible for the leadership and outcomes of the mergers and acquisition (“M&A”) origination process. This role works closely with CBIZ senior management, as well as Business Unit leadership teams to identify and develop M&A candidates which align with CBIZ’s M&A strategy.

Essential Functions and Primary Duties: 

  • Responsible for supporting the organization’s long-range strategic plans to ensure growth through M&A.
  • Develops an active pipeline of qualified acquisition targets through personal contacts, prospecting, networking, and referrals that closely align with CBIZ’s strategy.
  • Setting strategies and methods of marketing to create awareness of CBIZ as a potential M&A partner and illustrate its value proposition
  • Document activity, notes, and prospect data in appropriate CBIZ systems
  • Builds strong external relationships across a wide range of constituents to include bankers, sponsors, consultants, internal CBIZ personnel, and other intermediaries to source potential acquisition targets.
  • Initiates and leads introductory meetings with prospective targets.
  • Supports the company throughout the negotiation process as needed.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with all internal corporate, including M&A team, Senior Leadership, and Business Unit stakeholders.
  • Research, prepare and deliver presentations to Senior Leader’s regarding new growth opportunities and external M&A activity as requested
  • Embrace and represent CBIZ’s core values in all dealings with internal and external constituents.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Significant experience in M&A of the scale and complexity seen at CBIZ.
  • A sales and marketing-centric approach to developing M&A targets, demonstrated by a track record of consistent activity, persistence, and commitment.  
  • Premium skills in networking as well as accurately identifying and qualifying acquisition targets.
  • The ability to quickly establish trust and confidence, while exuding knowledge and passion about the benefits of joining CBIZ.
  • Expertise in strategic analysis, excellent business judgment, and experience with other aspects of the M&A process.
  • Professional services M&A experience, experience in a client-facing role in a professional services firm, or extensive M&A origination experience outside of professional services.
  • The ability to work collaboratively both internally and externally.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum 10 years’ professional experience with more than 5 years in Mergers & Acquisitions or a related field with a focus on corporate development and origination.   
  • Bachelor's Degree in business, finance marketing, or related field or equivalent experience is preferred. 
  • Travel is expected to be approximately 20-30%- in a post-covid world.   
  • The position will be based in Cleveland, OH but will consider candidates outside.
