Essential Functions and Primary Duties

  • Serve as the SALT technical resource for Denver and Phoenix,  collaborating with client teams to review client SALT issues and recommend SALT solutions,  engaging the National SALT practice as needed
  • Serve as client’s trusted advisor, demonstrates knowledge of industry trends, identify client issues and conflicts; proactively communicate solution options to client and team
  • Manage staff on engagement deliverables (such as SALT tax returns, and research memoranda,  etc.); function as the SALT technical review lead as a member of the final engagement review team to ensure quality control standards are met; ensure on time delivery and on budget
  • Demonstrate proficient technical skills for handling SALT related client responsibilities, including knowledge of trends, industries, alternatives, etc.
  • Understand the client’s organization, procedures and internal policies
  • Participate in client meetings, presentations and proposal development and meet individual cross serve goals
  • Manage and retain multiple client relationships, engagements and special projects
  • Develop overall engagement budget for SALT projects,  and SALT work as part of a larger client engagement project
  • Consistently meet charge hour goals
  • Assist client service team in billing and realization on SALT projects
  • Supervise, train and mentor staff; listen and communicate effectively
  • Foster a team environment; demonstrates support of management and decisions and build a positive culture
  • Participate in practice development activities that lead to the generation of new business and the opportunities for cross-serves
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Specific State & Local Tax Preferred Qualifications

  • Good research skills with respect to highly technical matters in Sales and Use and Income/Franchise
  • Strong writing skills, ranging from an articulate email to persuasive tax protest
  • Good working knowledge of the more common SALT services, such as:
    • Apportionment studies -Cost of Performance VS. Market based, including the intricacies of each
    • Voluntary Disclosure Agreements
    • Nexus studies – sales tax and income franchise
    • Sales taxation of SaaS services in select states
  • Good working knowledge of the US Supreme CT decision in Wayfair
  • Staying abreast of SALT developments in select states, such as CO, AZ, NV.  Present developments to management group
  • Strong Practice Management skills:
    • Ensure Engagement Letter are issued in accordance with firm policy (do not render specific without an Engagement Letter in place)
    • Ability to price an engagement – presenting such to office management
    • Leverage the National SALT Practice.  NTO SALT is your “bench” and readily accessible.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in Accounting, Taxation or related field
  • 6 years of experience in public accounting or related field
  • 3 years supervisory experience
  • Must have active CPA or equivalent certification
  • Ability to manage all aspects of client engagements
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing throughout all levels of organization, both internally and externally
  • Must be able to travel based on client and business needs
  • Proficient use of applicable technology
